The Teaching of Plastic Arts | Plastic art is a broad concept that encompasses the entire art genres, beginning with the physical art forms such as calligraphy, painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture and crafts, to the non-physical art forms such as images, movement, time, and sound. Althoguh it is considered to be mainly focused on the senses or experiences. For the most part, plastic art is understood as the creative formation of thoughts and feelings carried out by men through objects. By experiencing the formation of concepts, plastic art education is expected to increase the value of general education through the understanding of objects not only in the physical, practical forms but also in the non-physical forms. To achieve this goal, formation plastic art education needs to change its paradigm from ‘one-sided teaching’ to ‘shared learning’. With this change, students can have their sensitivities and their own formative potentials stimulated, obtain critical views to find meanings and new concepts, and develop an experimental spirits to create their own aesthetic values. We at the Society believe that the true role of art education is to help students acquire the knowledge of visual cultures. | | Elements and Principles of Plastic Art | The elements and principles of art include point, line, plane, shape & form, color, value, hue, energy, margin, space, texture, mass & volume, movement, and light. Throughout these elements, there are governing principles, which we call the Principles of Plastic Arts. These principles are the basic rules in creating any type of plastic art, which govern the universality in aesthetics, including unity and variation, proportion, rhythm, balance, harmony, and contrast. | | Historical Background and Plastic Arts Education in Korea | Plastic Arts Education in Korea has gone through many changes in the 20th century. Art education in schools has been influenced more by western modernism, than by our traditional principles of art education. However, starting in the 1980s, there have been ongoing efforts to find the most suitable means for our art education. We are now in the process of gathering solutions from diverse sources and creating academic values through new forms of integration. | | The Role and Future Mission of Plastic Arts Education | Art education in Korea has been mainly influenced by western art education, but recently there have been efforts to find the paths of art education that are suited to our culture and social environment. In the 21st century, as art and cultural education will be a primary force in building national competitiveness, social and cultural demands will have to be reflected in art education on a national level. Art education is no longer just a school subject; we are devoted to transforming it into a comprehensively integrated subject that nurtures the wholeness of a person. Therefore, with love and pride in our culture and art, we strive to develop a scientific and unique art educational system that will guarantee more capable, educated human resources in the future. Founded in 1984, the Society for Art Education of Korea is committed to continuous research in order to achieve its visions for, and goals of, our art education. All members of the Society will join in this passionate endeavor to achieve our goal, which is to contribute to the advancement of learning through art education. |
